The demand for remodeling work is low in today’s depressed economy; therefore, scam artists are out to hurt others while benefiting themselves
Detroit, MI -- Mike Deluca Interior painting contractor and drywall installation expert from Troy, Michigan was recently interviewed by Mark Maupin, AKA Mr. Home Repair. Mike has over 15 years experience in the paint and drywall trade, providing commercial, residential, and industrial service for all of Oakland County and the Metro Detroit area.
Mike said “I feel blessed to go to work in a trade that I love; not many people are lucky enough to enjoy the work they do every day. I am passionate about providing quality paint and drywall services. Unfortunately there are a lot of poor drywall repairs out there. I have on many occasions had to replace drywall that a handyman tried to pass of as a quality repair or installation job. I have found houses that were painted the year before that looked like they where 15 year old paint jobs. When you’re looking to hire a contractor, remember ‘buyers beware’. There are so many fly-by-night companies out there. Don’t be fooled by a slick talking salesman.”
“So, how does one go about making sure they are hiring the right contractor to do the job?” asked Mark. Mike responded, “There are 6 key points I tell everyone who is looking to hire a contractor. They are:
1. Use only licensed, insured contractors
2. Use a reputable company; check with the better business bureau3. Ask for references; they should be more than happy to provide them
4. Look at their previous work; a good contractor will be happy to show photos
5. If your job involves demolition, use a company who is specialized to do this
6. Get a written quote of exactly what will be done and the cost
“A licensed contractor will be more than happy to provide all the above information. He won’t be offended if you ask for it; in fact, he will probably volunteer it because he knows he is competing for your business. A good contractor, especially one who does painting, drywall and remodeling jobs, will have before and after photos of his previous work. If the job you need to have done requires demolition, be sure the person you hire is well qualified in this area; a lot of serious damage can be done when you start tearing out walls, especially load bearing walls.”
Mark was impressed with the amount of information Mike had to share. “I have been in the brick repair business for 13 years; I’ve also witnessed the nightmares people have suffered from poor workmanship that cost them big bucks.”
The interview concluded with a final comment from Mike, “There are plenty of good painting contractors and drywall installation companies in business. Don’t let a con man or handyman taking on more than he can handle ruin your home remodeling experience.”
